24-year-old World Cup sensation named France football captain following Hugo Lloris’s retirement

Paris Saint Germain striker Kylian Mbappe has been announced as the new skipper of the France national football team by the management after France legend Hugo Lloris announced his retirement from international football. According to the French sports daily L’Equipe, Mbappe accepted the captaincy offer after talking to the coach Didier Deschamps.

Hugo Lloris, who resigned from international football in January after leading France to their second consecutive World Cup final, which they lost to Argentina, was rumoured to be replaced by Mbappe. The 24-year-old has 66 caps and has helped France to win the World Cup in 2018 and finish as runners-up in 2022.

Mbappe previously captained France against Denmark in a Nations League encounter in September. As a result of his outstanding performance at the 2022 World Cup, Deschamps is certain that he has grown enough to lead the team, making him one of the youngest captains in Les Bleu’s history.

Lloris led France for 14 years, from 2008 until 2022, making him the country’s longest-serving captain. When France plays the Netherlands at the Stadium de France on Friday in a 2024 European Championship qualifying match, Mbappe takes over as the team’s captain.

Meanwhile, after PSG’s Ligue 1 loss to Rennes, Mbappe apologised to the jeering fans, the Ultras, while Lionel Messi remained in the locker room and left the field alone. According to the Clarin newspaper, Messi immediately entered the dressing room after PSG’s 2-0 defeat to Rennes, who had previously won the first round.

Unlike Messi, PSG captain Kylian Mbappé went to meet the crowd. The reports said that there were a few jeers and whistles directed at Messi during the line-up announcement before the game. “After the goals we took control, but Steve Mandanda had good saves in the second half. I’m not satisfied, but in the context, with the many absences, we knew it would be difficult,” PSG coach Christophe Galtier was quoted as saying in Clarin newspaper.
