3 Players who will be ideal to lead the Indian Test team after Rohit Sharma

Published on

The Indian Test team is going through a massive transition and some of the younger players, who have been excellent in the domestic circuit, are getting a chance in the longest format of the game. Some of the senior players have been under the scanner for the longest time possible and some experts and pundits have voiced their opinions on Rohit Sharma leading the country in the Test format.

Some young players, who had been given a chance earlier, have made their chances count and have begun to become a major part of the Indian Test set-up. After the World Test Championship final loss to Australia, Rohit Sharma seems to be under the radar to lose his Test captaincy. There are a few potential candidates who can lead the Indian Team forward in Test matches.

Three Players who will be ideal to lead the Indian Test team after Rohit Sharma: –

1) Shubman Gill

Even though Shubman Gill is only 23 years old, he has already had great success playing cricket internationally. The right-handed batter has solidified his spot in the Indian Test side as well as has won over fans both at home and abroad with his hitting.

Despite not having previously led India as captain, Gill guided India ‘C’ to the Deodhar Trophy finals in 2019–20. In the competition, he served as captain for seniors Suryakumar Yadav, Dinesh Karthik, Mayank Agarwal, and Axar Patel.

It’s important to keep in mind that players like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, and KL Rahul will continue to play for a while. They might also be able to assist Shubman Gill in making decisions early on.

2) Rishabh Pant

Another solid choice for India’s future Test captain may be Rishabh Pant. He has already established himself as a key member of the Test team at the age of just 25. He may now be the finest Test wicketkeeper-batsman in the world thanks to his centuries in England, South Africa, and Australia. Pant might be the ideal candidate to lead India in Test matches because of his focus on the future.

Pant has served as captain before and is currently a member of Team India’s executive committee. After KL Rahul had an injury and couldn’t play in the T20I series versus South Africa in June 2022, he was chosen as the captain. While only 20 years old, he also took over as Gautam Gambhir’s captain for Delhi in the Vijay Hazare trophy tournament.

3) KL Rahul

KL Rahul has prior experience captaining Team India in Tests and has served to be a great leader. In the 3 Tests that he has captained the Indian Test side, he has won two and it needs to be noted that all three Tests came on away soil. The two Tests he won were against Bangladesh, and the test he lost was against South Africa which might not go well in his favour.

He has been in and out of the Test squad because of his inconsistent form, but if he is in form, he is considered to be one of the best batters that India currently has. He is still young and with some experience already in Tests. He can be the future skipper of the Indian Test Team.
