‘4th position is fixed now’ – Fans react as Shreyas Iyer smashes 199 runs in practice match ahead of Asia Cup

The 17-member squad for the Asia Cup was announced on August 21. Notably, the team has marked a surprise inclusion of India star batter Shreyas Iyer, who was earlier ruled out of the team during the fourth Test match of the Border Gavaskar Trophy owing to some grave injuries. In addition, the KKR skipper had missed the IPL 2023, the World Test Championship Final, and the recently concluded West Indies and Ireland tour.

Moreover, the 28-year-old’s cricketer presence will be very important for Rohit Sharma’s side in the Asia Cup, as the star batter was the highest run scorer in ODIs in 2022. In addition, the stylish middle order batter had hammered 199 runs in the practice match and fielded 50 overs, which gathered the attention of the selectors to pick him up in the squad for the marquee event.

Shreyas Iyer smashed the bowlers at the NCA, scoring 199 in a practice tie: Reports

Notably, the Indian Cricket Board reveals that the right-handed batter had smashed a 199-run knock at the NCA in Bengaluru. In addition, the star batter was looking into his solid form and fit at the NCA just 3–4 days ago, which helped the 28-year-old cricketer make his way into the squad.

“He smashed the bowlers at the National Cricket Academy, scoring 199 in a practice tie. To provide the selectors with more evidence of his fitness, he then fielded for the entire 50 overs of that match, which was held at the Just Cricket Academy in Bangalore 3-4 days back,” a reliable source from Indian Cricket Board told TOI.

Notably, a few days back, posting a picture on Instagram with NCA medical chief Nitin Patel and trainer Rajnikanth Sivagnanam, Iyer wrote: “Been a long journey but I’m super grateful to the people who stood by my side to help me get to where I am today. Thank you Nitin bhai, Rajni sir & everyone at the NCA, also outside of it, who’ve been tirelessly helping me. Much love and much appreciated.”
