Unlike the perception of the shortest format of the game, bowlers have played massive roles in their team’s successes. The same has been the case with the Indian Premier League (IPL). Over the years, teams that have won the titles have won due to their good bowling. Meanwhile, in this listicle, let’s have a look at the five best bowling spells of IPL history.

Alzarri Joseph in IPL 2019

1. Alzarri Joseph

The West Indies pacer made his debut in the IPL 2019 for Mumbai Indians. In the game against Sunrisers Hyderabad, the five-time winners batted first and managed 136/7 with none of the batters failing to reach a half-century. In reply, the home team, SRH was never in the chase with Joseph taking six wickets for 12 runs in 3.4 overs to bowl out SRH for 96.

2. Sohail Tanvir

The former Pakistan left-arm pacer played for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2008. In the reverse fixture against Chennai Super Kings in Jaipur, the visitors won the toss and elected to bat first. However, thanks to Tanvir’s six wickets for 14 runs in four overs, the Yellow Brigade was bowled out for 109. In reply, the home team chased down the target in 14.2 overs and eight wickets in hand.

3. Adam Zampa

The Australia leg-spinner played for now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiants in the 2016 season. In the game against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Zampa took six wickets for 19 runs in four overs to restrict the eventual champions to 137/8. In reply, RPS lost the game by four runs. 

Anil Kumble in IPL 2009

4. Anil Kumble

The former India Test skipper and RCB skipper during the 2009 and 2010 seasons took a five-wicket haul against the then-defending champions, Rajasthan Royals. Royal Challengers batted first and managed only 133/8. In reply, the Royals were bowled out for 58 runs with Kumble picking five wickets for as many runs in 3.1 overs.

In the Eliminator game between Lucknow Super Giants and Mumbai Indians in the 2023 season, the former champions batted first and amassed 182/8. In reply, the Super Giants were never in the chase as they kept losing wickets. Akash Madhwal took five wickets for as many runs in 3.3 overs.
