The Australian Open has a special place in the hearts of tennis fans. It is the first of the four Grand Slams of the year, preceding the French Open, the Wimbledon and the US Open.

Novak Djokovic, the undisputed tennis king of Melbourne, won his tenth Australian Open title this year after defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas. As such, who are the players with the most men’s singles titles in the Australian Open?

Here’s the list:

5. Ken Rosewall -4

The first entry in this list is that of yet another Australian Legend who won the title four times. However, he did so 37 years after Jack Crawford’s achievement of the same feat. Ken Rosewall won his first men’s singles title in just the third year (1953) of his participation in the Australian Open. His latest title came in the year 1972. The 88-year-old retired in the year 1980 after 24 years of professional Tennis and 8 Grand Slams. He has two men’s singles titles each in the French Open and the US Open.

The American tennis star Andre Agassi has also won the men’s singles title at the Australian Open. He only misses out on a full entry into this list based on his timing of achieving the feat; Agassi completed his haul of four titles in the year 2003.

4. Jack Crawford – 4

On number four is another Australian tennis legend, Jack Crawford, who won the title four times. His first title came in 1931, the sixth year of his participation. He had two semifinal and two quarterfinal appearances in his last five participations before winning the coveted silverware.

The Australian Icon retired in 1951 after 25 years of professional Tennis and 6 Grand Slam titles. To his credit, the legend also has one French Open men’s singles title and one Wimbledon men’s singles title. He passed away in the year 1991, aged 83.

3. Roger Federer – 6

On number three, we have a player with six Australian Open men’s singles titles. However, Roger Federer will end up in the third spot on this list because the player ahead of him on this list achieved the feat earlier than the Swiss tennis star did. Federer’s first title came in 2004, the sixth year of his participation, while his most recent title was in 2018.

The tennis superstar who announced his retirement last year shares the record for most Grand Slams by any men’s tennis player (22) with Novak Djokovic. However, his record is under Serbian threat, with Djokovic expected to participate in the upcoming Grand Slam events.

2. Roy Emerson – 6

On number two, we have a local hero. Australia’s Roy Emerson has won the coveted title six times. The first one came in 1961, the eighth year of his participation. His wait didn’t go in vain as the 86-year-old Australian reached a consecutive final in the next year, where he lost to Rod Laver.

However, this final defeat brought a string of good luck as Emerson went on to win five consecutive titles from 1963 through 1967. He finally retired in 1983 after 15 years of professional Tennis and 12 career Grand Slams.

1. Novak Djokovic – 10

It is a clear giveaway that the man sitting atop this list is none other than the Serbian sensation Novak Djokovic. Having won the men’s singles title at the Australian Open 10 times in 18 participations, Djoker is the undisputed king of Tennis in Melbourne. His first title came in 2008, the fourth year of his participation, while his latest title is the one he won in January 2023.

With his latest win in Melbourne, Djokovic now has 22 career Grand Slams, level with Raphael Nadal for the most by any men’s tennis player. It is only fitting for tennis fans to enjoy the 35-year-old Serbian in action as long as he lasts in competitive Tennis.
