Australia batter Ellyse Perry missed out on her century by just 1 run in the ongoing Women’s Ashes Test at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Thursday. The 32-year-old got out on 99 runs off 153 balls hitting 15 boundaries. Her innings have put Australia in a commanding position on Day 1 of the Test match as they have scored 328 runs for the loss of 7 wickets so far.

Talking about the match, Australia won the toss and decided to bat first against the hosts in a one-off Test. Phoebe Lichfield was the first to fall for the visitors after scoring 35 in nine overs. After that, Beth Mooney and Ellyse Perry added 48 runs for the second wicket. Mooney got out after scoring 33 runs off 57 balls with four boundaries.

After that, Perry and Tahiila McGrath put up a 119-run partnership for the third wicket. McGrath got out after scoring 61 runs off 83 balls hitting eight boundaries. The next big partnership of the innings was between Ashleigh Gardner and Annabel Sutherland who added 77 runs for the seventh wicket. Gardner scored 40 off 76 balls while Sutherland got out after scoring 39 off 71. Sutherland and Alana King are still at the crease by the end of Day 1. Sophie Ecclestone took 3 wickets for England, while Lauren Filer put 2 in his bag. On the other hand, Kate Cross and Lauren Bell shared a wicket each.

After Day 1, Perry hailed England spinner Ecclestone for her heroics. The left-arm orthodox spinner bowled 31 out of 85 overs on the Day. Conceding 71 runs, she took the wickets of Tahila McGrath, Jess Jonnasen and the Australian skipper Alyssa Healy. Perry, who has played alongside Ecclestone in the Women’s Big Bash League, heaped praise on the England all-rounder.

“It’s quite unique if I think about the Tests I have played in over the years, to just have one front-line spinner in the bowling attack. That speaks volumes of how incredibly good Sophie Ecclestone is. She is the pre-eminent spinner in the world, and to be trusted with that job in the England team, she showed her quality today. It’s a big shift. In a lot of respects, it’s probably even-stevens in the end. She is quality and is a big challenge for all of us,” Ellyse Perry was quoted as saying.
