‘Bhai tu kar sakta hai’ – Fans react to Steve Smith’s ‘hopefully I won’t have to bowl too much’ statement after Nathan Lyon’s injury in Ashes 2023

After winning the first Test by two wickets against England in the Ashes 2023, they are currently locking horns against the Three Lions in the second Test of the series, which is played at the Lord’s, in London. Australia was bundled out after scoring 416 runs. After the end of play on day two, England are 278 runs for the loss of four wickets.

When star spinner Nathan Lyon walked off the pitch during the second day of the Lord’s Test, Australia’s chances of defending the Ashes were severely damaged. Lyon, Australia’s only spinner, is believed to have sustained a calf injury, raising questions over his continued participation in the ongoing match and the series.

Following the conclusion of play on the second day, former Australian captain Steve Smith, who brilliantly anchored his team’s first innings with a century, highlighted his concerns about Lyon’s injury. Smith regretted the damage to the veteran spinner and thought the visitors had suffered a “big loss” as a result. After Lyon left the pitch, Travis Head bowled a couple of partial overs of spin.

I really hope it’s not too bad for him: Ben Duckett

“I haven’t been up in the sheds yet, but obviously it didn’t look good. It doesn’t look ideal for the rest of the game. I’m not sure how he actually is. But obviously, if he’s no good, it’s a big loss for us. He’s in his 100th consecutive Test match, which I know he was really looking forward to taking part in and having a role in as well,” Smith told reporters at the end of the day’s play.

“Fingers crossed he’s OK, but it didn’t look good. For batters, I suppose there’s loads of us around, so it’s a bit different. It’s not ideal, particularly your spin bowler. But Nathan, if he’s no good, he’d be a huge loss,” the right-hand batter asserted.

Star England opener, Ben Duckett also expressed his sympathy for Lyon following his injury. Although Duckett thought the Australian would recover quickly, he believed Lyon’s injury may have a significant impact on the game’s result.

“It’s a huge shame, and I really hope it’s not too bad for him. You never want to see anyone go down with an injury. We all wish him the best. He was going to play a massive part in that fourth innings, he’s such a good bowler. It will be interesting to see how they go about it,” Duckett reflected on Lyon’s injury.
