‘Umpire nahi tha kya match me’ – Fans left puzzled as New Zealand spinner Eden Carson bowls 11 overs in ODI agaisnt Sri Lanka women
New Zealand Women’s off-spinner Eden Carson bowled 11 overs in the second ODI of the ongoing ODI series against Sri Lanka on Friday. The visitors registered a thumping victory by 111 runs at the Galle International Cricket Stadium. The series currently stands at 1-1 with one match to go.
As Sri Lanka were chasing a target of 330, Eden Carson already completed her spell at the end of the 45th over of Sri Lanka’s chase with figures of 2-40. However, despite there were plenty of overs remaining by the rest of the bowlers, Carson continued to bowl from the other end after the next over. In her extra over, she bowled five dot balls and conceded a single and ended up with figures of 2-41-1-11.
Notably, according to the rules by the Apex Cricket Council, Women’s ODI playing conditions specify that ‘no bowler shall bowl more than 10 overs in innings’ under rule 13.9.1. However, there is still no confirmation why Carson bowled that one extra over.
Sophie Devine and Amelia Kerr laid foundation for a big total
Talking about the match, New Zealand women won the toss and elected to bat first against Sri Lanka. The visiting team posted a total of 329 runs for the loss of 7 wickets, powered by the centuries by the skipper Sophie Devine and Amelia Kerr. In reply, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 218 runs in 48.4 overs.
New Zealand didn’t have a great start as they lost 2 wickets for 57 runs in 10 overs. After that, Amelia and Devine took the innings further and put up a mammoth partnership of 229 runs for the third wicket. Amelia got out after scoring 108 runs off 106 balls hitting seven fours and a six. While Devine turned out to be a top scorer as she got out after scoring 137 runs off 121 balls with 17 fours and two sixes. For Sri Lanka Oshadi Ranasinghe took 3 wickets, Udeshika Prabodhani scalped 2, while Inoka Ranaweera and Sugandika Kumari shared a wicket each.
Chasing the winning total, Sri Lanka kept losing wickets at regular intervals. However, Kavisha Dilhari played a fighting knock as she got out after scoring 84 runs off 98 balls hitting nine boundaries. At last, the hosts were bowled out n the penultimate over of the match. For New Zealand, Lea Tahuh took 4 wickets by conceding 31 runs in her eight overs.
