The Ashes 2023
‘Accha hua retirement se wapas aa gaya’ – Fans react as Moeen Ali completes 200 wickets and 3000 runs in Test cricket for England
England all-rounder Moeen Ali joins the elite list while batting on Day 2 of the ongoing 4th Ashes Test at the Old Trafford Cricket Ground in Manchester. The 36-year-old completed 200 wickets and 3000 runs in the longest format of the game after he hit the Australia skipper Pat Cummins for a boundary during the 14th over of England’s first innings.
Notably, Ali picked his 200th Test wicket during the third Ashes Test at Headingley, and now he has become the 16th player to take more than 200 wickets and score 3000 runs in red-ball cricket. With this, Ali joins the elite list featuring legendary cricketers like Shane Warne, Kapil Dev, Imran Khan Jacques Kallis, Shakib Al Hasan, Garry Sobers and many more. Meanwhile, current cricketers like Ravichandran Ashwin and Stuart Broad are also featured on the list.
It should be noted that Moeen Ali took retirement from Test cricket in 2021, but reversed his decision after almost two years to get featured in England’s squad for the ongoing Ashes after a discussion with the skipper Ben Stokes, Head Coach Brendon McCullum and the managing director Rob Key.
Can England save the series in Manchester?
It is a great achievement for the veteran all-rounder after making a comeback in the longest format. Now, Moeen will be hoping to win the Ashes for England for calling off his Test career. However, it would not be an easy task for the hosts as they are already trailing by 1-2 in the series. The Three Lions need to win the ongoing test in order to keep themselves alive in the series and set a series decider in London.
Talking about the match, Australia were bowled out for 317 runs in their first innings. Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith put up a 59-run third-wicket partnership for the hosts after an early fall of wickets. Labuschagne got out after scoring 51 runs off 115 balls hitting six boundaries. Mitchell Marsh was the second half-centurion with 51 runs off 60 balls. For England, Chris Woakes took a five-wicket haul. In reply, England have lost 1 wicket so far with Zak Crawley and Moeen Ali still at the crease.
