‘Ye Cup toh humara hai’ – Fans react as India thrash Sri Lanka by 302 runs in ODI World Cup 2023

The ODI World Cup 2023 has entered into its business end of the tournament and in the match number 33, it was the undefeated team India taking on the Sri Lankan team. It was a re-match of the 2011 edition of the ODI World Cup where both these teams locked horns in the finals at the same venue. But the game was a one-sided affair as the Indian team won the match by 302 runs and with this win they became the first team to qualify for the Semi Final.

The match began with the Sri Lankan skipper Kusal Mendis winning the toss and electing to bowl first. India, after losing captain Rohit Sharma early, saw a standout partnership of 189 runs between Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill. Kohli, a modern-era batting maestro, scored 88 runs in 94 balls with 11 fours, missing out on a century that would have equalled Sachin Tendulkar’s record. Gill, with his elegant strokes and flair, provided solid support but was also dismissed just short of a century, scoring 92 runs off 92 balls with 11 fours and 2 sixes. While both contributions boosted the team, fans eagerly await their next chance at centuries on the World Cup stage.

But it did not stop there Shreyas Iyer also joined the party with his long range of shots and stroke-making ability. Iyer also missed out on a well-deserved century as he was dismissed for 82 runs off just 56 deliveries. The right-hand batter smashed three boundaries and six maximum sixes. It was some brilliant batting from India at the death as they posted 357 runs from their 50 overs.

Sri Lankan batting bowed down in front of Indian seamers

In their chase, the Indian bowlers asserted dominance right from the opening delivery, with Jasprit Bumrah dismissing Pathum Nissanka LBW. The Sri Lankan team subsequently lost wickets consistently throughout their innings. Mohammed Siraj made a significant impact in Mumbai, taking the wickets of three top-order Sri Lankan batsmen within his first seven deliveries.

Following Siraj’s impressive spell, India’s most successful ODI World Cup bowler, Mohammed Shami, secured his second five-wicket haul of the tournament in just three matches, marking his third overall in World Cup history. The trio was on fire as the Sri Lankan team never looked to answer sheer pace bowling. The entire Sri Lankan team was bundled out for just 55 runs.
