ODI World Cup 2023
‘Weak team ko pel rhe hai angrez’ – Fans react as England boosts by 160-run win over Netherlands in race for Champions Trophy spot
The England cricket team won their eighth game of the ODI World Cup 2023 on November 8 as they thrashed the Netherlands by 160 runs and now place themselves in the eighth spot. Notably, the defending champions have failed to retain the trophy; however, they can qualify for the Champions Trophy 2025, slated to take place in Pakistan.
Speaking about the game here, it was England skipper Jos Butter who won the toss and invited the Netherlands to field first. Notably, after being elected to bat first, England wicketkeeper-batsman Jonny Bairstow was out for just 15 runs, while Joe Root was dismissed for 28 runs. However, left-handed batsmen Dawid Malan and Ben Stokes played a great role and forged a wonderful partnership to boost their innings.
Dawid Malan scored 84 runs from 74 balls, featuring 10 boundaries and two sixes, while great all-rounder Ben Stokes piled up 108 runs from 84 balls, featuring six sixes and six fours, with a slid strike rate of 129 that boosted their middle order in the game. Later, towards the end, Chris Woakes also got 51 runs from 45 balls, which helped them post 339/9 in the given 50 overs.
Ben Stokes has been named Man of the Match for his maiden ODI World Cup century for England
However, during the chase, the Netherlands had an awful start as Max O’Dowd was cheaply departed for just five runs, whereas Colin Ackermann was out on the duck. However, skipper Scott Edwards and middle-order batsman Bas de Leede tried hard to chase down the total but lost their crucial wickets. Later, no other batsman could stand for their side, and they were all dismissed for just 179 runs, handling a great win for the Jos Buttler-led side.
Meanwhile, great all-rounder Ben Stokes has been named Player of the Match for his maiden ODI World Cup century. “More pleased with the victory (than scoring a century), it has been a tough World Cup for us. It was a nice wicket to bat on and had some tennis-ball bounce. We (Woakes and himself) built a good partnership, whenever there was pressure building I had a look at the scoreboard and reminded myself there was a lot of time remaining (in the innings),” Ben Stokes said at the post-match presentation.
