‘Kis baat ke defending champions hai ye’ – Fans react as Durban Super Giants register thumping victory over Sunrisers Eastern Cape by 35 runs

In the fifth fixture of the SA20, the defending champions, Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SUNE), faced off against the Durban Super Giants (DSG) at St George’s Park in Gqueberha on January 13. Despite Tristan Stubbs putting up a solitary fight, the Sunrisers couldn’t present a formidable challenge to the Durban Super Giants. The match witnessed DSG securing an impressive 35-run victory over the host SUNE. This marks the second consecutive win for DSG, propelling the Durban-based franchise to the top spot in the points table.

On a batting-friendly wicket, DSG posted an above-par total, allowing them to defend a substantial score. Opting to bat first, DSG got off to an explosive start with Quinton De Kock and Matt Breetzke providing a fiery opening. The momentum continued through the middle overs, where JJ Smuts and Nicholas Pooran took charge, each scoring half-centuries. Smuts played the aggressor, notching up 75 runs in 38 balls with 4 fours and 7 sixes, while Pooran contributed 60 runs in 31 balls, featuring 5 fours and 4 sixes.

SUNE’s bowling performance was a mixed bag. The new ball pair of Worrall and Marco Jansen effectively contained runs and took wickets. Liam Dawson in the middle overs was economical and impactful. However, bowlers from the other end struggled, with S Harmer and Baartman proving expensive, allowing DSG to reach a commanding total of 225 runs.

SUNE fell short by 35 runs

In pursuit of a daunting target, Sunrisers faced early setbacks, losing two quick wickets to the bowling of Richard Gleeson and Reece Topley. This early pressure forced Sunrisers Eastern Cape to take time to stabilize the chase, falling behind in the process. As the recovery effort began, the task seemed almost insurmountable.

Talking about batting Tom Abell, Aiden Markram, and Tristan Stubbs made valiant attempts to revive the innings. However, by the time they launched an assault on the bowlers, it was somewhat too late. Abell showcased a commendable performance, scoring 65 runs in 36 balls, while Markram and Stubbs contributed 29 (21) and 55 (26) runs, respectively. Gleeson’s impressive bowling spell played a pivotal role in DSG’s victory, as they won by a margin of 35 runs.
