Australian Open 2023
‘The GOAT with bigger horns’ – Fans hailed Novak Djokovic as he wins 10th Australian Open title
In the Australian Open final on Sunday at Rod Laver Arena, Serbia’s Novak Djokovic defeated Uruguay’s Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5) to win his 10th Australian Open title and 22nd Grand Slam overall.
With this victory, Djokovic has regained the top spot in the ATP rankings and has now won 28 straight matches at the hard-court tournament. The 35-year-old has made an astonishing recovery after missing out on the Australian Open a year ago because he was not immunized against COVID-19 and was deported.
Djokovic adds to his record by winning a 10th championship in Australia. His 22 major titles, which include seven Wimbledon titles, three U.S. Open titles, and two French Open titles, tie Rafael Nadal for the most by a man in tennis history.
I would say this is the biggest victory in my life, considering the circumstances: Novak Djokovic
With this 93rd ATP tour-level victory, Djokovic broke his tie with Spain’s Rafael Nadal for the fourth-most victories. At 109, Jimmy Connors now owns the record.
Djokovic was competing in his 33rd major final, while Tsitsipas was in his second. The 24-year-old Greek’s first major final, which took place at the 2021 French Open, also saw Djokovic defeat Tsitsipas.
“This has been one of the most difficult tournaments, considering the circumstances. not playing last year and coming back this year. I want to thank all the people who made me feel comfortable,” Djokovic said after collecting the trophy.
There is a reason I have been playing my best tennis here. Only the team and the family know what we have been through. I would say this is the biggest victory in my life, considering the circumstances,” he added.
Tsitsipas dropped to 0-3 in major finals. He was defeated by Djokovic in the 2021 French Open as well. “He’s the greatest that has ever held a tennis racket,” Tsitsipas said after the game.
Here’s how fans applauded Novak Djokovic on social media:
