Australian Tennis star reacts to memorable triumph over Roger Federer in Madrid Open 2015

Nick Kyrgios, a tennis prodigy from Australia, recently shared his thoughts on defeating Roger Federer in the 2015 Madrid Open’s second round. The last time Kyrgios competed was at the 2022 Japan Open, where he withdrew from a match against eventual champion Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals. The Australian was set to open his 2023 campaign at the United Cup’s inaugural competition, but he was forced to pull out due to injury. Kyrgios hasn’t played since undergoing surgery on his left knee in January.

Tennis TV encouraged their social media followers to share their favourite tournament experiences as the Madrid Open was about to start. One supporter brought up Nick Kyrgios’ 2015 match with Roger Federer. In a game that lasted two hours and 37 minutes, Kyrgios shocked the world by defeating Federer 6-7(2), 7-6(5), and 7-6(12) while playing against the Swiss legend for the first time in his career. Reposting Tennis TV’s Instagram story, Kyrgios reflected on one of his finest victories. “Incredible moment,” Nick Kyrgios wrote alongside his Instagram story.

‘He’s the greatest of all‑time, no doubt’ – Nick Kyrgios on Roger Federer

In his post-match interview with the media, Kyrgios discussed his victory over the Swiss Maestro and referred to Federer as the “greatest of all time.” “I guess that’s why you play the game, to play on these big courts against these big players. He’s the greatest of all‑time, no doubt,” Kyrgios said. “When you’re growing up and playing and watching these guys, you want to go out there. That’s one thing I think about every time I step out against one of these guys on a court like that,” he added.

Kyrgios advanced to the third round of the competition after defeating Federer, the top seed, before falling to John Isner. The only time Kyrgios defeated Federer was in the second round of the Madrid Open; after that, the 20-time Grand Slam champion defeated him six times in a row.

In 2015, Nick Kyrgios debuted at the Madrid Open, where Isner eliminated him in the round of 16. He lost to Kei Nishikori in the quarterfinals the following year. In the third round of the Masters tournament in 2017, Kyrgios faced eventual champion Rafael Nadal and fell to the Spaniard in straight sets. Kyrgios last competed in the 2019 Madrid Open, where Jan-Lennard Struff defeated him in the opening round.
