Asia Cup 2023
‘A bold move by Bangladesh’ – Fans react as Shakib Al Hasan appointed as Bangladesh’s new captain for ODIs
Bangladesh star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan is all set to lead his side for the upcoming Asia Cup and the World Cup. Notably, the great batter is leading his side in 50-over formats due to the absence of Tamim Iqbal, who has been ruled out of the Asia Cup owing to a back injury. In addition, the 36-year-old cricketer has been appointed captain in all three formats, whereas he was named captain of only T20Is and Test matches last year.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Cricket Board President Nazmul Hassan revealed this news while speaking to some journalists. Notably, the President also said that the squads for the Asia Cup and World Cup will be released on Saturday, August 12 as the selectors will be picking up a 17-member squad.
“We have appointed Shakib as the captain for the Asia Cup and World Cup. The World Cup and Asia Cup squads will be announced tomorrow. The selectors will pick a squad of 17 members,” said Nazmul Hassan, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President.
Shakib Al Hasan was the obvious choice to lead Bangladesh
The Bangladesh President further added that Hasan’s appointment was the obvious choice for their side and also revealed that the squad for the Asia Cup and World Cup will almost be the same; just one extra spot will be there in the World Cup, which might be for Iqbal, who is suffering from a back injury.
” He is the obvious choice. Who else can lead? But we had to talk to him before appointing him. Nobody should think anything else. Shakib is the captain. He was always the main choice. They have just one spot open. We still don’t know about Tamim Iqbal who is recovering from a back injury. We might trial one or two openers in the Asia Cup,” the president added further.
Meanwhile, the great Bangladesh cricketer has appeared in 233 ODIs while scoring 7147 runs, with the best score of 134 unbeaten runs. In addition, the great spinner had also grabbed 302 wickets with the best bowling figures of 5/29.
