Big Bash League 2023-24
‘A great match, well done Brisbane Heat’- Fans react as Brisbane Heat beat Sydney Sixers by 54 runs to clinch their 2nd BBL title
Last year’s finalists Brisbane Heat turned their previous heartbreak into ecstasy after winning the BBL 2024 title by defeating Sydney Sixers by 54 runs at their home ground. Brisbane Heat lost to Sydney Sixers in the Qualifiers but made a resounding comeback after winning consecutive matches to lift the Big Bash for the second time. Josh Brown who smashed a record-breaking century in the previous match carried on his good form and went on to make another half-century in the all-important final match.
Henriques’ decision to opt for bowling first proved to be beneficial early on as paceman Sean Abbott secured a crucial breakthrough in the opening over. Heat’s wicketkeeper, Jimmy Peirson, charged down the deck but only managed to feather the bat through to the wicketkeeper Josh Philippe, departing for 4.
Despite a slow start, Brown accelerated his innings after the fielding restrictions were lifted in the fifth over, swiftly approaching a half-century in just 32 deliveries. Unfortunately, McSweeney couldn’t maintain the momentum, falling victim to Dwarshuis shortly after the drinks break. He top-edged a pull shot, resulting in a catch by Todd Murphy at deep fine leg, departing with a score of 33 from 32 deliveries.
In the late stages of the innings, Max Bryant (29 runs from 19 balls) and Matthew Renshaw (40 runs from 22 balls) provided some explosive hitting, accumulating 31 runs during the two-over Power Surge. However, their efforts were overshadowed by a sudden collapse, losing five wickets for just 19 runs in the final 12 balls.
Sean Abbott, who claimed three wickets in the penultimate over, concluded with figures of 4-32, making history as the first cricketer to take at least four wickets in a BBL final.
Spencer Johnson’s 4-26 sealed the title for Brisbane Heats
Remarkably, this record only stood for about 90 minutes as Left-arm quick Johnson secured figures of 4 for 26, the best recorded in a BBL final to win hit the BBL title for the second time. Spencer Johnson who made his white-ball debut for Australia last year against India was adjudged the man of the match in the finals.
Fans took to social media to express their views on the penultimate match of the tournament and the Heat’s second title victory. Here are some of the tweets from the fans from X:
