‘Aaj Tigers khulke dahade hai’ – Fans react as Bangladesh defeat Afghanistan by 89 runs in Asia Cup 2023 clash

After losing the first match of the group stage against Sri Lanka by five wickets, Bangladesh locked horns with Afghanistan in the fourth encounter of the ongoing edition of the Asia Cup on Sunday, September 3, at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, Pakistan. The Bangla Tigers won the match by 89 runs and Mehidy Hasan Miraz was awarded the Player of the Match for his all-round performance.

Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hassan won the toss and elected to bat first. The Tigers, while batting first, scored a total of 334 runs with the loss of five wickets. The highest scorer for the team was their opener, Mehidy Hasan, who scored 112 runs off 119 balls with seven fours and three sixes in his innings.

Najmul Hossain Shanto also scored a century too. He slammed 104 runs from 105 balls, which included nine fours and two sixes in his innings. For the Afghanistan side, the bowlers had a very bad outing on the field as out of the five wickets came in the form of a runout. One wicket each was snapped by Mujeeb Ur Rehman and Gulbadin Naib in their respective spells, where they conceded 62 runs and 58 runs, respectively.

The Afghanis, while chasing a mammoth total of 335 runs, were bundled out for 245 runs after batting for 44.3 overs. The highest scorer for their team was Ibrahim Zadran, who scored 75 runs off 74 balls with 10 fours and a six in his innings. Their skipper, Hashmatullah Shahidi scored 51 runs from 60 balls, which included six fours in his innings but it was not enough to take his side over the line.

The pick of the bowlers for Bangladesh was Taskin Ahmed, who grabbed four wickets in his spell of 8.3 overs, where he conceded 44 runs in his spell. Three wickets were bagged by Shoriful Islam in his spell of nine overs where he conceded 36 runs and bowled one maiden over. One wicket each was taken by Hasan Mahmud and Mehidy Hasan in their respective spells, where they conceded 61 runs and 41 runs, respectively.
