‘He will be captain in T20 World Cup……’ – Aakash Chopra on Rohit Sharma’s return in T20I side
Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra feels Rohit Sharma will captain India in the T20 World Cup 2024 after head coach Rahul Dravid and senior staff’s tenure get extended following the ODI World Cup 2023. Notably, the host lost the ODI World Cup 2023 final and shifted focus to the next marquee event with the India vs. Australia bilateral series, which started on November 23.
The well-renowned cricket commentator has backed India’s skipper, Rohit Sharma, to lead the side in the upcoming marquee event. However, the former India opener believes that Virat Kohli will be batting at number three in the 2024 T20 World Cup. Notably, both star cricketers didn’t play a single T20I game after Team India’s loss during the 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final against England in Adelaide. Following them, Hardik Pandya has always led the team in the shortest format of the game.
“He (Rohit) might go as the captain and I feel he will go now. When you have kept Rahul based on continuity, how will you ask Rohit Sharma to go somewhere else? According to me, Rohit is going to be the captain in the T20 World Cup as well. If he is in slightly good form in the IPL, which I feel will be the case this time, he will play with a little freedom, Rohit Sharma will be our captain. You will see Virat Kohli only playing at No. 3,” Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
You might see a different opening partner for Rohit Sharma: Aakash Chopra
Aakash Chopra affirmed that the side will almost be the same as in the T20 World Cup 2022. However, the 46-year-old cricketer believes Shubman Gill or any other opening batter will open the innings with Rohit Sharma over KL Rahul, who did open in the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia.
“You might see a different opening partner for Rohit Sharma, but I don’t who that will be. Your core is not going to change. You will see an almost identical squad that played in the 2022 T20 World Cup. It will play in 2024 as well,” he added further.
