Aakash Chopra uncertain about Rohit Sharma’s future as Indian Test captain after WTC final loss

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra said that he is uncertain about Rohit Sharma’s future as the Test skipper after India lost the World Test Championship final against Australia last week. It is noted that Rohit took over the role in the longest format after the former skipper Virat Kohli decided to step down in January 2022 after the series in South Africa.

Speaking on his Youtube channel, Chopra hailed Rohit for his batting and captaincy in red ball cricket. However, he also added that he is not certain about his future as a skipper in Tests. The cricketer-turned-commentator said that India reached two WTC finals but could not win anyone and also added that Rohit’s age can also be a big factor in his future in Tests.

“Rohit is a good captain, there is no doubt about that. Rohit is a good Test batter, there is no doubt about that as well, but will the future remain like this only – I am not 100% certain because you have reached the final in the last two cycles but haven’t won even once, and age is not on his side, this is the reality,” Chopra said.

“When you see the next two years, and another WTC cycle – 2025, Rohit Sharma could still be playing Test cricket if he really wants to play Test cricket. Six series is a lot of time,” he further added.

‘I don’t think you will be allowed to take a lot of breaks’ – Chopra

Speaking further, Chopra also said that the selectors may also start to look beyond Rohit as a Test skipper by the end of the year 2023. He is also not sure whether the 36-year-old will be able to play all three formats or not. He believes that the selectors may start looking for the next option after the South Africa tour.

“We have seen people missing a lot of cricket in the last two years. The position at which Indian cricket is standing, I don’t think you will be allowed to take a lot of breaks. In such a scenario, you want to play three formats but will you be able to do that?” the former cricketer said.

“Can the selectors, by the end of 2023, when you come back from South Africa, start thinking about the next WTC final? One year will remain. There will be five Test matches against England. Then you have to go to Australia, so should they look for a change? This is going to be an interesting one,” he added.
