All Indian athletes set sights on Paris 2024 Olympics

As the years pass by, the number of Indian athletes at the Olympics rises. Previously, in 2020, India went to Tokyo with 124 athletes. This was the highest number of athletes sent to any game. Moreover, this time too, all the Indian athletes have qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympics. Thus, India will undoubtedly want to see more athletes qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics and add to their medal total from the Tokyo Games.

The first athlete to qualify for the Olympics in Paris was trap shooter Bhowneesh Mendiratta. Indian shooters achieved first-ever quotas in every Olympic shooting discipline. Priyanka Goswami and Akshdeep Singh, race walkers, became the first Indians to earn spots in the athletics competitions at Paris 2024.

Reaching the Olympic qualifying level is only one step in the process. The decision of who will be chosen to represent their country at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris will ultimately be made by national Olympic Committees.

Indian athletes’ performances

India has secured 13 quota spots thus far in their pursuit of the 2024 Olympics in Paris. Moreover, countries win quotas in the shooting and wrestling categories instead of individuals. This regulation is in place to keep a select few nations from controlling the entire competition. It also implies that an athlete can be substituted for the one who met their quota.

Six Indian competitors broke the qualifying standard for the Paris Olympics in the men’s 20-kilometre race walk. However, the number of competitors from each national federation that can compete in the event in the Olympics is limited to three. Previously, India won seven medals in the 2020 Summer Olympics, with gold going to javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra. Following their extraordinary performance at the 19th Asian Games, which were recently held in China, Indian athletes have already broken an Olympic record. India won a record 107 medals, including 38 silver, 41 bronze, and 28 gold.
