Star India pacer Jasprit Bumrah is anticipated to travel to New Zealand for surgery on his problematic back in the most recent move in the injury issue. According to media sources, a New Zealand surgeon who has previously treated England’s injury-prone speedster Jofra Archer has been chosen by the medical staff of the Indian Cricket Board in collaboration with the National Cricket Academy (NCA). It appears that plans are being made to fly Bumrah to Auckland as soon as possible.

The Mumbai franchise recently experienced a significant setback when it was revealed that Bumrah would miss the whole 2023 Indian T20 League owing to ongoing back problems. His availability for the World Test Championship (WTC) final at The Oval in June, if India makes it there, is also in question.

Rowan Schouten, a surgeon in Christchurch, is anticipated to operate on Bumrah, following a Cricbuzz report. Schouten has collaborated with famous orthopedic physician Grahame Inglis. Inglis performed surgery on former New Zealand sprinter Shane Bond. Bond, who works as the Mumbai franchise’s bowling coach, may have suggested the name, Schouten.

Jasprit Bumrah’s last International game was last year

According to the sources, in addition to helping Inglis operate on Archer, Australian fast bowlers James Pattinson and Jason Behrendorff also received assistance from Schouten, one of the best in his area.

The NCA medical staff apparently thought that surgery was Bumrah’s last choice after numerous rehabilitation efforts failed to heal his back injury. The right-arm seamer could possibly undergo the procedure with the help of an NCA physician. Bumrah had previously consulted a specialist in England in 2019 after being diagnosed with a stress fracture in the lower back. He is anticipated to be out for 20 to 25 weeks following surgery.

The speedster for Team India, across all three formats, hasn’t played for his nation since September 25, 2022. His last encounter for India was a T20I in Hyderabad against Australia. He was thrashed for 50 runs in his four overs of bowling. Bumrah was initially included in the Indian team for the 20-20 World Cup in Australia after being excluded from the Asia Cup in the UAE last year. He was eventually declared unfit, though, and Mohammed Shami took his place.
