After winning the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2-1 against Australia, India lost the three-match ODI series 2-1 to the visitors after they lost the third and final match of the series, played at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium on Wednesday, March 22. This was India’s first series loss since 2019.

After winning the toss, Australia were bundled out for 269 runs. The top scorer for them was Marsh with 47 runs off as many balls he played in his innings with eight fours and a six. Carey scored 38 runs off 46 balls with two fours and a six. Travis Head and Marnus Labuschange also played crucial knocks for the side.

For the hosts, the pick of the bowlers were Hardik Pandya and Kuldeep Yadav as both them snapped three wickets each in their spells. And two wickets each were grabbed by other Indian bowlers, Mohammad Siraj and Axar Patel in their respective spells.

While chasing a target of 270 runs, Men in Blue fell short by 21 runs. Indian openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill started off the innings very well as they both together scored 65 runs in 55 balls before the skipper was dismissed after scoring quickfire 30 runs in just 17 balls with two fours and two sixes each. Former India skipper Virat Kohli was the highest scorer for Men in Blue with 54 runs off 74 balls with just two fours and six. Gill, Pandya and KL Rahul also scored runs but it was not enough.

The spinning duo of Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar were the pick of the bowlers for Australia. Where one side the leg-spinner bagged four wickets while on the other hand, Agar took two wickets. The stand-in skipper Steve Smith stated opined in the post-match presentation that this series victory is one of the most memorable ones.

“It’s been an enjoyable tour. The way we fought back after the Test match was great. We haven’t played at our best in the ODI series but we got over the line. It’s the playing conditions for us. It’s all about summing them up and playing accordingly,” Smith was quoted as saying in the post-match presentation.
