FIFA World Cup 2022
Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez explains reason why he kept Golden Glove award over his private parts
Argentina’s long wait of winning a FIFA World Cup came to an end on Monday after Lionel Messi and Co. beat France 4-2 on penalties in the final on Sunday. Argentina skipper, Lionel Messi put in an outstanding performance on the day of the final. He scored a brace and also scored one during the penalty shootout.
Messi was playing the last World Cup in his career and winning a World Cup trophy was the only title missing from his cabinet. After beating France in the final, his biggest dreams also turned into a reality.
Along with Messi, one more player who made a significant contribution during the game was Argentina’s goalkeeper, Emiliano Martinez.
He produced one of the best performances in his football career. Martinez made two outstanding saves during the penalty shootout and also made several other brilliant saves during the game.
Following Argentina’s win, Martinez was awarded the Golden Glove. However, he made headlines for wrong reasons as he made a lewd celebration upon receiving the award. His celebration received a lot of criticism across the world.
The Argentina goalkeeper has now come forward to explain the reason behind that celebration. Martinez said that the celebration was in response to the unfair treatment meted out to him by French supporters.
“I did it because the French booed me. Pride does not work with me,” he told Argentine radio station La Red.
“This is a moment I’ve always dreamed of living, I have no words for it. I left very young for England and I would like to dedicate this victory to my family.”
The Argentina player also praised France for coming back into the game despite the early setback.
“We suffered a lot. We thought we were in control but they managed to come back,’ he added. “It was a very complicated game. Our destiny was to suffer. “They had one last chance to win [Kolo Muani’s late shot]. Luckily I was able to stop it with my foot.
