Australia announce squad for Test series against India; Mitchell Starc doubtful for first Test
Despite being unable to play in the first Test due to a finger tendon injury sustained during the Boxing Day Test against South Africa, Mitchell Starc was, nonetheless, selected for the four-game Border-Gavaskar Trophy, starting on February 9.
Prior to the second Test in New Delhi, the left-arm seamer will be a member of the Australian team. All-rounder Cameron Green, who also sustained a finger injury during the South Africa series, is also a questionable starter. However, Green should be available beginning with the first game of the series in Nagpur.
The 18-member Australian squad for the India tour had a few significant surprises. While seasoned hitter Peter Handscomb was recalled, uncapped spinner Todd Murphy was added to Australia’s Test squad as a potential Nathan Lyon spin partner.
For the four-Test series in Nagpur, Delhi, Dharamsala, and Ahmedabad in February and March, Australia will bring four spinners, including Mitchell Swepson and Ashton Agar. Uncapped pacer Lance Morris was retained in the squad as a backup. In the lineup for their most recent Test against South Africa in Sydney last week, opener Marcus Harris was left out.
Todd Murphy has progressed quickly having impressed in domestic cricket: George Bailey
“After a successful home summer the squad is excited by the challenge a Test tour to the subcontinent provides. We have selected a squad that provides the depth and flexibility required to adapt depending on the conditions we may encounter,” said chairman of selectors George Bailey
In different situations, according to Bailey, the combination of left and right-handed batsmen, four specialized spinners, and six fast bowlers, including Green, provided choices.
After impressive showings for Victoria and Australia A over the past 12 months, selectors preferred Todd Murphy, above white-ball specialist spinner Adam Zampa because they saw him as a long-term alternative for veteran Lyon.
“Todd Murphy has progressed quickly having impressed in domestic cricket and recently with Australia A. With those performances Todd has emerged as a strong spin option. Selection in this squad also provides another opportunity to spend time alongside Nathan Lyon and assistant coach Daniel Vettori in India which will be invaluable to his development,” said Bailey.
