Afghanistan defeated Sri Lanka in Pune to clinch their third win of the tournament in the ODI World Cup 2023. A collective team effort from the players helped Afghanistan to beat a good side like Sri Lanka. In Pune, Afghanistan defeated Sri Lanka for the first time in the history of the ODI World Cup 2023. It turned out to be a comprehensive win towards the end.
Afghanistan has been in a very good form in the tournament. Though they lost to Bangladesh in their first match, they defeated teams like England and Pakistan. The fans who had arrived at the stadium were treated to a fantastic performance from Afghanistan. It has been the case till now in the tournament. Afghanistan has certainly punched above their weight as a team.
For the first time in the history of the ODI World Cup, the Afghans defeated England and Pakistan in the tournament. Their win against Sri Lanka has been a byproduct of their previous wins against big teams. Afghanistan overcame Sri Lanka for the first time in the ODI World Cup
Against Sri Lanka, Afghanistan won convincingly. Bowling first, they restricted Sri Lanka to a total of just 241 runs. On a good wicket like Pune, it was a fantastic performance from the bowling unit. Fazalhaq Farooqi was sensational with the ball. He was good in both the Powerplay and the Death Overs. In his 10 overs, Farooqi claimed 4 wickets and conceded only 34 runs. Mujeeb picked 2 wickets and shined with the ball.
Chasing the target, Afghanistan lost Rahmanullah Gurbaz for a duck. After that, they had a safe ride. They scored runs in a calculative way. The middle-order trio of Rahmat Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi, and Azmatullah Omarzai scored fifty each. The trio helped Afghanistan to safely chase the target with more than 4 overs to spare. In the end, Afghanistan beat Sri Lanka by 7 wickets and climbed up to the fifth spot in the points table.
