Bangladesh batter Mushfiqur Rahim got out for mishandling the ball during 2nd Test against New Zealand

After a convincing victory against New Zealand in the first game, Bangladesh faces the Black Caps in the second test in Dhaka. While batting, the first team posted 172/10 in the first inning as they failed to put up a show with the bat. Star batter Mushfiqur Rahim was the highest run scorer with 35 runs off 83 balls with the help of three fours and a six.

However, Mushfiqur made headlines for a different reason, as he got out bizarrely. Mushfiqur, looking solid while facing a Kiwi bowling attack, was given out for obstructing the field. While facing Kyle Jamieson in the 41st over, Mushfiqur, attempting to defend, pushed the ball away with his gloves, prompting an appeal from New Zealand.

The on-field umpires sought a review, and television umpire Ahsan Raza upheld the decision, ruling Mushfiqur out for 35. It’s worth noting that Mushfiqur became the first Bangladeshi cricketer to get out in this manner, and he is only the second player to be out for obstructing the field in the history of the game. In 1951, Leonard Hutton was dismissed for obstructing the field against South Africa at the Oval.

The New Zealand spin trio outplays Bangladesh

At a rank-turner surface, Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss and opted to bat first. His decision didn’t go well with the team, as New Zealand kept taking wickets at regular intervals. The spin trio of Mitchell Santner, Ajaj Patel, and Glenn Phliphs took eight out of 10 wickets and changed the momentum of the game.

Santner dismissed Zakir Hasan (8), Najmul Hossain Shanto (9), and Mehindy Hasan Miraz (20). On the other hand, Glenn Philips dismissed Sahadat Hossain (31), Nurul Hasan (7), and Taijul Islam (6). Meanwhile, Ajaj Patel took crucial wickets from Mominul Haque (5) and Mahmudul Hasan Joy (14). It’s worth noting that in the first game, Bangladesh had beaten New Zealand by 150 runs.
