South African opener Dean Elgar scored a memorable 14th Test century on Wednesday against India. The 36-year-old is playing his final series for South Africa after having announced his retirement.

Batting on 97, Shardul Thakur’s short-ball was pulled for a four. This was followed by a wild celebration with a huge roar and a jump in front of his home crowd. It was a memorable century considering the difficult surface the match is being played on.

Earlier in the day, KL Rahul scored his 6th Test ton to help India score 245 runs. Team India began the day at 208/8 from 59 overs with Mohammed Siraj and KL Rahul batting. Bad weather ensured an early finish to the first day’s play during the Boxing Day Test.

Mohammed Siraj got the first wicket for India when he had Aiden Markram caught behind by KL Rahul for five. Tony De Zorzi and Dean Elgar rebuilt the innings with a 93-run stand for the second wicket.

Jasprit Bumrah then struck twice in quick succession to give the home side a massive jolt. The 30-year-old had Tony De Zorzi caught by Yashasvi Jaiswal for 28 off 62 balls. Number four batter Keegan Petersen was bowled thanks to an inside edge for 2. At that stage of the game, South Africa was placed at 113/3.

Debutant David Bedingham walked in and showed no signs of any pressure as he took the attack to the Indians. The day though belonged to Dean Elgar who showed attacking instincts to score a memorable century.  KL Rahul began the second day with a score of 70. The 31-year-old found an able partner in Mohammed Siraj who hung around for 22 balls to score his five runs. The 47-run stand for the 9th wicket was broken by Gerald Coetzee who had Siraj caught behind.

With just Prasidh Krishna by his side, KL Rahul got to his test century in style with a six. The century came off just 133 balls which was the quickest ton for KL Rahul in Test Cricket.
