Ahead of the Test Championship finals against India, star Australia batter David Warner dropped a bombshell by hinting about his retirement date from the longest format of the game. Warner announced on Saturday that he has decided to retire from his long and storied Test career, with plans to leave the format at the end of the current Australian summer.

Warner, who is currently in London, is preparing for the Test Championship final against the Rohit Sharma-led Indian team, which begins on June 7 and will be followed by a five-match Ashes series against England. During the practice session, he told reporters in Beckenham that he intends to retire from Test cricket after Australia’s Test match against Pakistan in January at his home stadium in Sydney, effectively ruling himself out of the two-match Test series against the West Indies.

However, Warner also revealed that he wants to continue white-ball cricket till the 2024 20-20 World Cup which is scheduled to be organised in the United States of America and West Indies. “You’ve got to score runs. I’ve always said the (2024) World Cup would probably be my final game,” Warner said on Saturday. “I probably owe it to myself and my family – if I can score runs here and continue to play back in Australia – I can say I won’t be playing that West Indies series. If I can get through this (WTC final and ensuing Ashes campaign) and make the Pakistan series I will finish up then”, he further added.

David Warner had an illustrious career

In white and red ball cricket, Warner has been phenomenal throughout his career for the Australian team. He has scored 6030 runs in 142 ODI matches at an average of 45. He has scored 19 hundred and 27 half-centuries in the format for Australia. In T20Is, he has scored 2894 runs at an average of 32.89 in 99 innings. He has scored a brilliant century too.

Talking about red-ball cricket, he has been phenomenal throughout his career. He has scored 8158 runs in 103 Test Matches at an average of 45.58. He is one of those players who have scored a triple century in the longest format of the game. Warner has scored 25 hundred and 34 fifties in Test cricket. However, he had a poor series against India in the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023, scoring just 26 runs in three innings.
