The top-seeded Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz beat Jordan Thompson 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 to register his 50th win of the season. In the rain-interrupted game at the Cincinnati Open, Alcaraz had the upper hand in the first game. It took three hours for him to secure the victory, with the world’s top-ranked player dominating the third set by winning two games and advancing to his second match point. Alcaraz faced a challenge from Thompson, ranked 55th, and his record now stands at 2-16 against Top-10 opponents.

After winning the game, Alcaraz expressed his happiness. He said, “I had never played him, and the start and stop were not easy.” “It was not easy to wait for the rain. He played aggressively, and I’m glad to get through. It was a long day waiting to play and then finding rain in the first set. I had to play at my best level at the end; I’m hoping for better conditions in the next round”, he further added.

Gael Monfils won the game despite a knee injury

In another match, Gael Monfils displayed remarkable determination, sealing a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over the 13th seed, Cameron Norrie, contributing to a British exodus. Monfils, the seasoned French showman, wrapped his left knee during the opening set of the first-round encounter.

Encouraging words from the physio boosted his confidence, propelling him to secure the win, leaving Britain trailing 0-3 for the day. Meanwhile, on the other court, Lorenzo Musetti knocked out Dan Evans with a decisive 6-4, 6-3 win. In other matchups, Alexander Zverev showcased his prowess, overpowering former tournament champion Grigor Dimitrov with a commanding 6-2, 6-2 victory.

On the other hand, Victoria Azarenka, a two-time champion in Cincinnati, staged a remarkable comeback from a 1-4 deficit in the second set to defeat Barbora Krejcikova with a final score of 6-3, 7-5. Meanwhile, Petra Kvitova, also a two-time Grand Slam champion, triumphed over Anna Blinkova with a score of 7-6 (7/2), 6-0.
