Daniil Medvedev ends defending champion Carlos Alcaraz’s reign at US Open 2023
Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev stunned defending champion Carlos Alcaraz by 7-6(3), 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 to make it to the US Open 2023 final on September 8 in New York. Notably, this clash has deprived tennis spectators of an exciting end to the prestigious Grand Slam season they were eagerly expecting.
In addition, the final is all set to take place on September 10, featuring former US Open champion Daniil Medvedev and three-time champion Novak Djokovic. Moreover, the fans will definitely miss the hottest rivalry between Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz in the upcoming final match.
Meanwhile, the 27-year-old is all set to play in his third US Open final in five years. Notably, the Russian-born tennis star has already lost to Rafael Nadal in 2019 (New York) as well as suffered defeats against Djokovic in 2021 and 2022 during the Australia Open. In addition, he is looking forward to take on Djokovic in the final match. Moreover, he feels it will be a challenge for him to beat Djokovic owing to his magnificent performances in past editions.
The challenge is to play a guy who won 23 Grand Slams: Daniil Medvedev
“The challenge is to play a guy who won 23 Grand Slams and I have only one. When I beat him here, I managed to play better than myself and I need to do it again. There is no other way,” Daniil Medvedev said in his on-court interview.
“I said I needed to play 11 out of 10. I played 12 out of 10, except the third set. That’s the only way. I don’t know if he’s still 20 or 21, but [he is] so young, already two Grand Slams, World No. 1 for many weeks. It’s honestly just pretty unbelievable and I think nobody has done it before him. To beat him, you need to be better than yourself and I managed to do it.”
Meanwhile, the final on Sunday will seemingly have some terrific moments as Djokovic looks for a fourth US Open to tie Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slams and gain some legitimate revenge against Medvedev.
