Danny Murphy suggests that Bruno Fernandes’ suspension is a blessing in disguise

Manchester United face Liverpool at Anfield this Sunday (December 17) in a highly anticipated Premier League clash, albeit with a twist. United captain Bruno Fernandes will be absent after accumulating his fifth yellow card of the season during the team’s 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth, sparking an argument with the referee.

Former midfielder Danny Murphy has surprisingly suggested that Fernandes’ absence could be a “slightly more comfortable” situation for United in this crucial encounter. Murphy argues that United can adopt a more solid midfield formation without Fernandes, potentially freeing up space for quicker counter-attacks on the flanks.

“Without him, United can be more solid…”

“The United captain’s suspension makes the manager’s game plan easier. Without him, United can be more solid with a midfield three of Sofyan Amrabat, Kobbie Mainoo and Scott McTominay, and have pace on the flanks for counter-attacks by Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Antony. If Bruno occupied one of those positions, he wouldn’t be quick enough in transition and this way McTominay can get forward to support Rasmus Hojlund,” Murphy said.

According to the 46-year-old Murphy, Marcus Rashford should be appointed the captain in the absence of Fernandes. However, the suggestion has met with scepticism from fans and pundits, highlighting Rashford’s current dip in form, a stark contrast to his stellar season last year. Adding to the uncertainty, his fitness has been under scrutiny these past weeks.

Fernandes’ undeniable creative spark and leadership qualities will be sorely missed by the Red Devils. Erik ten Hag will need to find a way to effectively replace his captain and navigate the hostile Anfield atmosphere if United are to secure a positive result against their fierce rivals. The game will be a tough one for ten Hag and Co. as Liverpool, currently perched atop the Premier League table, boast impressive form, having won their last six league games. Their high-pressing, attacking style under Jurgen Klopp will be a tough nut to crack for United.
