‘He is worth his weight in gold for South Africa’ – Dinesh Karthik lauds Dean Elgar for his magnificent ton on Day 2 of 1st Test vs India

India’s star cricketer Dinesh Karthik spoke about the shots played by South Africa star opener Dean Elgar on Day 2 of the first Test game against India on December 27. Notably, the home team is standing with a score of 256/5 at the end of Day 2, owing to a magnificent tonne by the left-handed batter. Dean Elgar smashed an unbeaten 140 runs, featuring 23 boundaries, to put his side in the dominant position.

However, Dinesh Karthik feels Dean Elgar used simple techniques and less movement in the game. In addition, the wicketkeeper batter heaps praise on South Africa’s batter owing to his brilliant century against strong visiting sides.

“If you had to dissect Elgar’s batting, he is a very old-school batter in a modern game today. What he does have is a very simple technique and very minimal movements. He is very crouched in his stance and has a backlift which is already up; all he has to do is bring it down,” Dinesh Karthik said on Cricbuzz.

The cricketer-turned-analyst feels Elgar has used the magnificent shots to smash 140 runs on Day 2. In addition, the wicketkeeper batter feels it takes a lot of courage and skills to smash the century at the top of the order and to go unbeaten at the end of Day 1. Moreover, the southpaw will be looking to put India in a difficult situation on Day 3 in Centurion.

“Credit to Elgar. I thought he played a wonderful knock. It was one of those knocks which was laced with a lot of Dean Elgar kind of shots, leaving the ball, playing tough cricket, and just putting away the ones that were close to him or the really short ones. It takes a lot of courage and skill to be able to do what Dean Elgar does. He is worth his weight in gold for South Africa,” he added further.
