After winning the Border-Gavaskar series 2-1, India will lock horns against Australia once again at the Test Championship final which will take place at The Oval from June 7 to June 11 after the completion of the 16th edition of the Indian T20 League which is scheduled to start on Friday, March 31.

During the fourth Test match against Australia, Shreyas Iyer sustained a back injury. After that, he was unable to even bat in India’s opening innings and was sent for a scan. The next ODI series against Australia, without this player, is a big challenge. His participation in the Indian T20 League is also doubtful. Back injuries can occasionally be difficult to heal, therefore it is uncertain how long Iyer will need to recover in this case.

Whatever little cricket I have played or coached, I have never gone back over things like squad unavailability: Chandrakant Pandit

According to the reports, Iyer wants to play in the WTC finals which is scheduled to take place in the first week of June because of which he has decided to not undergo surgery and has said that he will take an injection at the NCA in order to play. “He has met the specialist and the NCA officials. All are on the same page that the operation can be deferred. He will follow the experts’ advice,” a source was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

However, the 28-year-old is set to miss most of the upcoming  Indian T20 League as he struggling fromm his back injury, and speaking about that newly-appointed the Kolkata franchise coach Chandrakant Pandit opined that Iyer would likely be missed as he is one of the important players of the squad.

“Whatever little cricket I have played or coached, I have never gone back over things like squad unavailability. Shreyas’s absence will make a difference since he is important, but this is truly unfortunate. We are hoping Shreyas will be back very soon and that will make a lot of difference to the team,” Pandit asserted.

The Kolkata franchise will be locking horns against the Punjab side in their opening fixture of the 16th edition of the Indian T20 League on Saturday, April 1, at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali.
