Cheteshwar Pujara, the Indian cricket team’s middle-order batsman, has been in sensational form in the ongoing English county championship. He scored his seventh century for Sussex in just his 11th match for the county club against Gloucestershire at the County Ground in Bristol.

After Sussex lost their openers, Pujara joined Tom Alsop at the crease and the duo added 100 runs for the third wicket, with Alsop falling for 67 runs. Pujara then formed a partnership with James Coles to build a big total in the first innings. On day two, he was unbeaten on 99 and completed his century on day three off 191 balls. This is Pujara’s second century in the ongoing 2023 County Championship, having scored 115 on his Sussex full-time captaincy debut at Hove against Durham.

Watch Pujara get to the 7th century:

With this century, Pujara surpassed Wasim Jaffer’s tally of 57 First-Class centuries to take the fourth spot among Indians with the most FC centuries. The top three spots are held by Sachin Tendulkar (81), Sunil Gavaskar (81), and Rahul Dravid (68), with Vijay Hazare (60) in fifth place.

Pujara’s brilliant form bodes well for the Indian team ahead of the World Test Championship Final against Australia at the Oval in London, starting on June 7. Pujara’s ability to bat for long periods and score big runs in challenging conditions makes him a vital cog in the Indian batting lineup. His experience in English conditions, gained through his stints with various county teams over the years, will also come in handy during the final.

Pujara’s consistent performances in the county championship will give him the confidence to perform at the highest level for the Indian team. The World Test Championship Final is a high-stakes match, and India will be hoping that their batters can put up a big score to put pressure on the Australian team. Pujara’s current form and experience make him a crucial player for India, and all eyes will be on him when the final begins on June 7.
