‘England wale kaise sochte hain ye sab’ – Fans react to Nathan Lyon’s statement on Kevin Pieterson’s comments about getting concussed intentionally

Off-spinner Nathan Lyon reacted angrily to Kevin Pietersen’s surprising statement that he stumbled down to bat so that the Australians could have a concussion replacement in case he was struck in the head. Considering one of his friends, Phil Hughes died after being knocked in the head, Lyon resolutely declared that the idea would never cross his mind.

On Day 4 of the second Ashes 2023 Test at Lord’s on Saturday, July 1, Australia lost their ninth wicket, and to many people’s astonishment, Lyon limped out to bat. The veteran Australian struck the ball well on several occasions, including one off a delivery from Stuart Broad that went for a boundary. Finally, he blasted one into the air in the direction of mid-wicket, where Stokes caught it and was out for just four runs. Stokes also praised Lyon and hugged him.

I’ve lost one of my mates due to being hit”: Nathan Lyon

While commentating on Sky Sports, Kevin Pieterson suggested Nathan Lyon to take one on the head and get a concussion substitute. He said, “I think [taking] time out of the game and also eking out every single run. [But] Imagine if he [Lyon] had been hit on the head and got a concussion, he’d have got a like-for-like replacement and a world-class spinner [Todd Murphy] … it gives food for thought.”

Nathan Lyon after the day’s play was furious about such comments and showed his frustration while talking to the media. He said, “I have heard comments that people thought I went out there to get hit in the head, and I’m really against that because I’ve lost one of my mates due to being hit in the head. So I think that’s a really poor excuse or conversation being had.”

Hughes was hit by a Sean Abbott delivery while playing for South Australia versus New South Wales during a Sheffield Shield game inside the SCG on November 25, 2014. Lyon was just a few metres away. Hughes lost consciousness immediately after collapsing. Later, he died in a hospital.
