Epic Games Store may bring a subscription option for gamers

Published on

Amidst the growing trend of subscription services in the gaming Industry, Epic Games may soon announce one of its own. This comes from leaked data mined entries about unnamed Epic Games Store subscriptions.

Fortnite by Epic Games already has a monthly crew subscription. The company can easily expand on the offering and have full-fledged subscription plan tiers along with regular game purchases.

Since Epic Games is a fairly large company, the service might include services from other companies like EA bundled together like Xbox game pass. There is currently no clarification on the subject from Epic Games.

What are gaming subscriptions?

Gaming subscriptions are a way for gamers to have access to multiple games by paying a small amount of monthly fee. A lot of major companies now provide subscription services including Xbox, Ubisoft, EA, PlayStation, etc.

Xbox Game Pass is currently the largest gaming subscription service with multiple titles and many others rotating every month. By paying the fee, gamers can access any game provided in the service free of cost for the duration.

Is the subscription system bad?

Gaming subscriptions are not necessarily bad. In fact, they can help new streamers to play multiple games on stream without spending too much money.

It also provides a boost to the company as more people can afford a $10-$20 subscription, compared to paying $70 for one single game. Last year, Steam alone saw over 14,000 game releases.

While a majority of these games were not groundbreaking, having them on subscription provides more options for gamers to play. That said, one thing to keep in mind is players do not own the games and will have to renew their subscription plan regularly. However, most of the full-game purchases are also not owned nowadays.
