The Ashes 2023

‘Great gesture’ – Fans react as English players don wrong names on back of their shirts in fifth Ashes Test

Published on

The fifth Test of the Ashes 2023 being played at the Oval in London is evenly poised as both England and Australia have levelled each other in the first innings. The start of the third day of the fifth Test is certainly the moving day in this Test match as both the teams have played their first innings each with just 12 runs separating both the sides

In the fifth Test match of the Ashes, the England team were seen donning the wrong names on the back of their shirts as the English players were seen walking onto the pitch in order to support those with Alzheimer’s. The England team wore different shirts to highlight the confusion caused by dementia. As the entire stadium and both teams’ players stood up in honour of them, a unique choir made up of those who had the illness sang “Jerusalem” to raise awareness about it.

After England’s hopes of tying the series in the fourth Test were dashed by nonstop rain on the final two days of play, Australia now leads the series 2-1. Australia has already retained the Ashes and is the current owner of the “urn” as a result. The Pat Cummins-led team, on the other hand, will be eager to take home the Ashes for the first time in 22 years. Notably, Australia defeated England to win the Ashes in 2001, with Steve Waugh serving as captain. Australia, who won the title of World Test Champions in June, will be motivated to add another triumph to their resume and finish the tour strongly.

England scored 130 runs in the first session on Day three

The England side started off positively in the day with both Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett blasting the Australian bowlers all around the ground. Duckett (42) was the lead role in the process as the duo went on to stitch together a partnership of 79 runs for the first wickets.

After the left-hand batter got out, the carnage from the English batters did not stop as Crawley (73) then combined with Ben Stokes (42) to continue the onslaught. Such was the impact of ‘Bazball’ that England went on to score 130 runs in the first session of day three of the fifth Test match.
