Vijay Shankar,  Gujarat Titans (GT) allrounder, is grateful to Ashish Nehra for believing in him despite the rocky beginning of his GT stint in 2022. Shankar, who seemed to be in excellent form this season, only managed to participate in four games for the squad in 2022 and score 19 runs.

Gujarat decided to keep the batter on the club, and they are currently reaping the benefits as the right-hander has had his best-ever Indian Premier League season, scoring 205 runs from 8 games. In discussion with News18, Shankar discussed Nehra’s influence on him as well as the team and claimed that the old fast bowler’s approachable demeanour is what sparks the magical energy in the camp.

Shankar discusses Ashish Nehra’s impact and his recent performances in the IPL 2023

Vijay Shankar spoke about how Ashish Nehra had a great influence on him and his effort. He said, “To be very honest, the season that I had last year. And for me to be retained and then play and do well, a lot of credit must go to him. If not for him, I wouldn’t have been playing here. You can actually see that he has played a lot of cricket. Whatever he speaks, he explains and expresses it in such a way that we either understand.”

Vijay Shankar spoke about the probability of getting selected for the ODI World Cup later this year in India. He said, “I am not thinking much of it honestly because it’s a long way from here and If I keep doing what I am doing, things will eventually happen. I don’t have to dream of getting into the World Cup team or getting back into the Indian team, I think if you are on the right path, things will happen automatically.”

The Gujarat Titans all-rounder then spoke about Ashish Nehra’s influence on the team and why he is so different from others. He said, “He finds a way to get everyone involved in the game and on the same page. Be it the captain or net bowler. All are equal. The last year, the first time we met, that was the first thing he said, ‘no captain, no net bowler. All are equal.”
