Mumbai star opener Prithvi Shaw scored his maiden first-class triple century in the Round 2 fixture against Assam at the Amingaon Cricket Ground, Guwahati. At the end of Day 1 of the encounter, the batter managed to remain unbeaten after scoring 240 runs.

On the first session of the second day, he took 326 balls to reach his triple century. He got dismissed after scoring 379 runs off 383 balls which included 49 fours and 4 sixes

Prithvi, who opened the innings with Musheer Khan, scored 123 runs for the first wicket. Afterwards, he contributed a 74-run partnership for the second wicket with Armaan Jaffer. He and skipper Ajinkya Rahane had a partnership of more than 300 runs. By scoring a century, Rahane is also providing strong backing for Prithvi.

Notably, this is Shaw’s first ton of this edition of the Ranji Trophy. In his previous seven innings, he had only managed to accumulate 160 runs, averaging 22.85 and recording a best score of 68. Shaw has been ignored for selection in the Indian team for a significant period of time now.

The 23-year-old has not been chosen despite regularly scoring in domestic competitions. His most recent appearance for India was in a T20I in July 2021. He came in second place in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy this season with 332 runs at a strike rate of 181.42 with a highest score of 134 against Assam.

He had a mediocre Vijay Hazare Trophy campaign, where he scored only 217 runs in seven innings, at an average of over 50 in List A cricket. Former Indian batter Gautam Gambhir recently advised coaches and selectors to support Shaw and keep him on their radar by endorsing him.

“Someone like Prithvi Shaw, the kind of start he had to his international career and the kind of talent he has, you back a player on talent. Yes, you have to look at the upbringing as well – where he comes from and the challenges he’s had as well. It makes even more sense for the management and the selectors to keep him around the mix, and help him get on the right track,” Gambhir was quoted as saying by Zee News.
