‘I didn’t have to worry about that’ – The Undertaker on his character in WWE’s current era

Nowadays, kayfabe is no longer relevant to viewers of professional wrestling. But many well-loved characters wouldn’t have been as successful or memorable as they were back then without it. That is The Undertaker’s opinion on his “Deadman” persona, at least. Undertaker confessed to “BT Sport” how challenging it would be to usher The Undertaker into the contemporary wrestling scene.

“It would be very difficult just because everyone [has] a phone that has a camera. I was able to live with this character because I didn’t have to worry about that. I didn’t have to worry about sitting in the airport in shorts and a Hawaiian shirt and somebody being like, ‘Oh, look, The Undertaker.’ I didn’t have to worry about that. Everybody sees somebody and immediately they want to film them and see what’s going to happen,” Undertaker was quoted as saying on BT Sport.

I lasted as long as I did: The Undertaker

Although Undertaker acknowledged that it would be challenging for a garish character like The Undertaker to succeed in the present landscape, he expressed a desire to accept the task. The WWE Hall of Famer continued by praising the development of athleticism in the industry but underlined that social media is a barrier to wrestlers sticking with it and creating a persona.

“I’m a dinosaur. My mentality is still 20 years ago, but there’s a reason why I lasted as long as I did. Just live [the gimmick] a little bit. You don’t have to go to the extremes that I did, but if you’re gonna post something, at least have it kind of match what you try on [TV],” he added.

Several noteworthy facts about the Deadman — and the man behind him, Mark Calaway — seem to be overlooked given how long the Undertaker spent as an active part of the WWE roster and how hard he strove to remain out of the public spotlight. These are a few things you probably didn’t know or may have forgotten over time.
