Indian Cricket Board set to question Harmanpreet Kaur for her unruly behaviour during 3rd ODI vs Bangladesh
India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur is facing a two-match ban from the Apex Cricket Council for her unruly behaviour during the 3rd ODI against Bangladesh. Days after the incident, Indian Cricket Board secretary Jay Shah opened up about the board’s stand on the incident. Shah revealed that the board is concerned about the event and is looking to counsel Harmanpreet Kaur.
While speaking with the press, Shah revealed that Board President Roger Binny and NCA Chief VVS Laxman will speak to Harmanpreet in the coming days. “Roger Binny and Laxman will question Harmanpreet on her outbursts during the third ODI against Bangladesh,” Shah told reporters in New Delhi.
Harmanpreet Kaur’s controversial dismissal came to the fore during the 34th over, when the visiting team’s score was 160 runs. She was given out LBW, but Kaur claimed that she had made contact with the bat before the ball hit the pad. Regrettably, with no Decision Review System (DRS) available in the series, the Indian captain couldn’t challenge the decision at that crucial moment. As a result, she furiously smashed her bat into the stumps and also argued with the umpires.
The consequences of Kaur’s ban have been particularly severe for the Indian side, as the right-handed batter will now miss the first two games of the upcoming Asian Games. Women’s cricket will be a part of the Asian Games 2022 in China, scheduled for September 19, 2023. This suspension will undoubtedly be a setback for India as they strive to perform well in the prestigious multi-sport event.
Harmanpreet Kaur was charged with two separate breaches
Harmanpreet faced the consequences of two separate breaches of the Code of Conduct during the third match. Firstly, the 34-year-old vented her frustration by smashing the stumps after her dismissal, when she was adjudged caught at slip during India’s chase. This action led to a Level 2 offence, and she was fined 50 per cent of her match fee and received three demerit points.
Following the match, Harmanpreet openly criticised the standard of umpiring, labelling it “pathetic.” Consequently, she was found guilty of breaching Article 2.8 of the Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which pertains to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision.” For this Level 1 offence, she was fined 25 per cent of her match fee and received one demerit point.
