Indian star avoids 4-match suspension, warned for alleged deceitful conduct towards umpire

The Apex Cricket Council has made a decision on whether Ishan Kishan intentionally misled the umpires during the first ODI in an appeal for a hit-wicket. Match Referee Javagal Srinath has now issued a warning to Kishan as he was found dislodging the bails deliberately when Tom Latham was batting. After appeals from Kishan and other Indians, it was sent upstairs to the third umpire. And on seeing replays, it was clear that Latham was nowhere close to the stumps.

Ishan Kishan could have potentially received a four-match suspension, according to a report from New Zealand media. “Deceiving an Umpire in an attempt to obtain an unfair advantage during the first ODI” was the alleged complaint against the Indian wicketkeeper. The reports further read that the match referee chose not to take any further action.

After the incident occurred, even Rohit Sharma, the captain of India looked perplexed. It is a Level 3 offence, as stated in the Cricket Governing Body’s Code of Conduct. Kishan ought to have been prosecuted for the Level 3 offence since he tried to acquire an unfair advantage by deceiving the umpire. A suspension of four to twelve ODIs or Twenty20 international matches results from this charge, if given to the Indian young batter.

Deliberate attempts to mislead an umpire are included in the Cricket’s governing body Code of Conduct’s Article 2.15, “Attempting to Gain an Unfair Advantage During an International Match.” The Code also says: “When assessing the seriousness of the breach, consideration should be given to whether the conduct was deliberate, reckless and/or negligent on the part of the relevant player.”

Why Srinath did not punish Ishan Kishan? According to the claim, Srinath took no action. This is perhaps because umpires Anil Chaudhary and Nitin Menon don’t seem to have officially reported Kishan for the incident. Even so, Srinath had separate conversations with Kishan, Rohit Sharma, Rahul Dravid, and the Indian skipper. India took the series by winning the first two ODIs. On Tuesday, the decisive game will take place in Indore.
