The match between Afghanistan and Sri Lanka turned out to be a thrilling one. Without a doubt, it was the match of the Asia Cup 2023 with so many edges-of-the-seat moments. In the end, Sri Lanka held on to their nerves and won the match by just 2 runs. But Afghanistan gave a run for the money and was in the winning position for the most part of the match.  

Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka won the toss and elected to bat first on a good batting surface in Lahore. In their 50 overs, Sri Lanka managed to score 291 runs for the loss of 8 wickets. Pathum Nissanka scored 41 runs in 40 balls. Dimuth Karunaratne scored 32 runs in 35 deliveries. Kusal Mendis was the batter of the innings for Sri Lanka, who scored 92 runs in 84 balls. 

Charith Asalanka, Dunith Wellalage, and Maheesh Theekshana played good cameos for Sri Lanka. To stay alive in the tournament, Afghanistan had to chase the target in 37.1 overs. Even if they could not do that, they could have qualified had they scored 294, 295, 296, or 297 runs in 37.3, 37.4, 38, or 38.1 overs, respectively. The unawareness of this information cost the match for Afghanistan. 

Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan’s efforts go in vain

Chasing the target, Afghanistan was reduced to 50/3 in 8.1 overs. From that point, the batters from Afghanistan put on a performance for ages. Gulbadin Naib scored 22 runs in 18 balls. Rahmat Shah batted well and scored 45 runs in 40 balls. The captain Hashmatullah Shahidi scored 59 runs in 66 balls. But it was Mohammad Nabi’s counterattack that kept Afghanistan in the game. 

The experienced All-rounder scored 65 runs in just 32 balls which included 6 fours and 5 sixes. The dismissal of Nabi was a huge relief for Sri Lanka. But the onslaught was continued by Rashid Khan, who tried his best to win the match for his team. In the end, Afghanistan fell like a pack of cards and lost the match by just 2 runs.
