‘It could be his last time out for Australia” – Michael Vaughan claims two star Australia players might retire after last Ashes Test at Oval

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has stated that he has heard rumours of the retirement of Australian opener David Warner and their star batter Steve Smith after the last Ashes match at The Oval in London. Warner’s recent form in Tests has been a topic of discussion for quite some time now. The experienced batter has failed to perform well in Tests in recent times and his poor display in the ongoing Ashes series continues.

Smith’s 32nd Test century came on June 29th, 2023, during the second Ashes Test at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London. This performance tied him with previous skipper Steve Waugh for the most Test century by an Australian. He also scored his 12th hundred in the Ashes series and he is tied with Jack Hobbs for the second-most tons.

It could be his last time out for Australia at the Oval as well: Michael Vaughan

Warner had previously stated his intention to retire in the new year, while many believe this might be Smith’s final Ashes series in England. Vaughan has now revealed to Fox Sports that he heard whispers that Smith and Warner would retire after the game at the Oval.

The former captain stated, “Well it’s always the case on a rainy day when the journos get a bit bored, and you start talking to a few.” “But the whisper was and I have no idea where they’re getting this whisper, but that Warner, if he plays at The Oval, it’ll probably be his last. Again I’m not too sure where they’ve got that.”

“And quite a strong whisper was about Steve Smith that it could be his last time out for Australia at the Oval as well. Again, I’ve not seen that personally, but it’s just the whisper and the gossip.” “It might just be the rain in Manchester that gets people talking, but that was the talk of the press box yesterday that a couple of Australian legends, greats might call it a day at The Oval.”
