‘It was a very, tough match’ – Jannik Sinner after defeating Novak Djokovic in Australian Open 2024
Jannik Sinner ended the World No.1 Tennis star, Novak Djokovic’s 25th grand slam dream by defeating him in sets, 6-1, 6-2, 6-7 (6/8), 6-3. Sinner reached the Australian Open 2024 finals and will play against Daniil Medvedev or Alexander Zverev in Sunday’s title match. The 36-year-old Serb lost the first set 6-1, surprising for most people watching the match. Sinner after the match accepted that Djokovic’s confidence shattered a bit after the first-set defeat which later helped him tackle throughout the match.
Sinner said, “It was a very, tough match,” said Sinner. “I started off really well. He missed in the first two sets. I felt like he was not feeling that great on court so I just tried to keep pushing.”
The 22-year-old played like a champion as he defeated one of the best players in the game. Even though there is an age gap of 14 years, Djokovic gave a tough fight to Sinner from the third set onwards. However, he couldn’t maintain his momentum and lost the match. With that, Djokovic’s 25th grand slam win remained a dream in this season.
Novak Djokovic’s first Australian Open defeat since 2018
Surprisingly, Novak Djokovic was undefeated in the Australian Open since 2018. After six long years, Jannik Sinner defeated Djokovic to enter the Australian Open 2024 finals. Djokovic is currently the No.1 ranked player and one of the best tennis players of all time. He has worked hard to reach wherever he is today. However, seeing him hit 29 unforced errors felt more like he lost the game in the first half.
Even though he tried to give a tough fight, Sinner did extremely well to not let his momentum down and consistently tried to frustrate Djokovic. Sinner’s approach from the first set was clear that he wasn’t afraid of facing the best man. He is in general a good player, however, when he plays against Djokovic, he plays with a lot of extra confidence. Two out of three times, Sinner has defeated Djokovic in their previous encounters. The crowd was thrilled to watch them play and will be hoping for more such fantastic encounters.
