‘Kabhi to jeetiye’ – Fans react as UP Warriors beat Gujarat Giants by six wickets in WPL 2024, Giants continue to remain winless
In the eighth game of the ongoing second season of Women’s Premier League 2024, UP Warriors and Gujarat Giants played each other. Ahead of the game, the Giants were coming off two back-to-back losses to begin the season. On the other hand, after losing to the Royal Challengers Bangalore in a last-ball thriller, they followed by a convincing win for the defending champions, Mumbai Indians.
Meanwhile, in the game, the Yellow Brigade, UP won the toss and elected to bowl first. They had a decent start as Sophie Ecclestone took out skipper Beth Mooney in the last over of the powerplay with 40 on the board. None of the Orange Army got going apart from Ash Gardner, who scored 30 off 17 balls. For the Yellow Brigade, Ecclestone took three wickets while Rajeshwari Gaikwad took one.
In the end, the Ahmedabad-based team managed only 142/5, thanks to the batting from Gardner otherwise they didn’t look like getting more than 135 at one stage. For the Lucknow-based team, Sri Lanka international, Chamari Attapattu made her WPL debut.
Gujarat Giants continues to remain winless
In reply, the Alyssa Healy-led side had a quick start with the skipper and Kiran Navgire (12) as they added 42 runs in 4.3 overs. Healy (33) followed soon after as she was cleaned up with Kathryn Bryce. Attapattu scored 17 off 11 balls on her debut but the team was reduced to 90/4 with Shweta Shehrawat getting out. At this stage, the likes of Grace Harris and Deepti Sharma put together an unbeaten 53 runs to take the team over the line. They had six wickets in hand and 4.2 overs left in the game.
With this, the Giants continue to remain winless in the ongoing winless. Last season, they won only two games, i.e. Royal Challengers Bangalore and the eventual finalists, Delhi Capitals. Last year, they lost to UP Warriors in both games and continues to remain winless against the same team.
