Jonny Bairstow is one of the most aggressive batters in Test cricket right now. Ever since England changed the way they played Test cricket, Bairstow has been exceptional in Test cricket as a batter scoring a lot of runs and finishing the games for fun. In 2022, England chased three 270+ totals in a row and Bairstow played a key role in those chases.

Even against India, Bairstow was the chief destructor chasing a total of over 370. But injuries kept him out of the English side from October 2022 to March 2023. Returning from the injury has not been easy for Bairstow. The Yorkshireman has not been asked to just score runs with the bat but is handed over the added responsibility of keeping the wickets.

The workload has surely been difficult on Bairstow. While the 33-year-old has not been great in keeping in Ashes 2023, his batting had also gone down barring the first innings of the first Test. In a must-win game in Manchester, Bairstow returned to form by scoring an unbeaten 99 in 81 balls, which helped England to score some quick runs on Day 3 of the fourth Test.

‘If I was that rubbish, I would not have played 94 Tests’ – Bairstow’s reply to a reporter in a post-match press conference

The wicketkeeper batter was unfortunate to not get a hundred in the innings, which would have boosted his confidence a lot more. But Bairstow ensured that England had an upper hand in the Test. A lead of 275 runs is mammoth in the context of the game. It looks like only weather can stop England from losing the fourth Test.

Speaking about his innings against Australia, Bairstow said “I have played a lot of cricket now and to be keep being told that I’m rubbish. If I was that rubbish, I wouldn’t have played 94 Tests”. Bairstow is not the most flamboyant batter one could see. He might not be the most pleasing batter to watch but does the required job for the team. The English wicketkeeper batter confirmed exactly the same to the viewers.

Here’s how the fans reacted to Bairstow’s statement:
