ODI World Cup 2023

‘Ban hone ka baad guilt aagya kya’ – Fans react as Kusal Mendis opens up on refusal to congratulate Virat Kohli on his 49th ODI ton

The Sri Lanka cricket team has been knocked out of the tournament after New Zealand registered a great win in their last match of the ODI World Cup 2023. Notably, the Kusal Mendis-led Sri Lanka team is also not able to qualify for the Champions Trophy 2025 as they currently place themselves at the bottom of the points table as well as indulge themselves in the controversy.

Notably, the Sri Lankan cricket team failed to make an impact in the ODI World Cup 2023, as they only got two wins from the nine games they have played so far. They defeated defending champions England as well as the Netherlands, which places them in the ninth spot in the points table.

However, the side was looking magnificent in the Asia Cup 2023, but they failed to show that great momentum in the marquee event. Notably, the Dasun Shanaka-led side reached the finals after defeating Afghanistan and Bangladesh in the group stage before thrashing Pakistan in the Super Fours of the marquee event.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka stand-in skipper Kusal Mendis has opened up about his refusal to congratulate India’s batting master, Virat Kohli. Notably, the top-order batsman was asked to congratulate the RCB stalwart for his 49th ODI tonne, to which he came up with a shocking answer. The 28-year-old cricketer directly refused to wish Virat Kohli a century ahead of their clash against Bangladesh.

I wasn’t aware that Virat Kohli scored his 49th ODI century: Kusal Mendis

However, the right-handed batsman has issued an apology for his refusal to congratulate India’s swashbuckling batsman, Virat Kohli. The opening batsman reveals that he wasn’t aware that Virat Kohli made his 49th ODI ton. Moreover, Kusal Mendis further said that the journalists suddenly asked the question, which he was unable to understand at that moment. The wicketkeeper-batsman also said he was sorry for that moment, clarifying that smashing the 49th ODI tonne is not an easy thing.

“I wasn’t aware that Virat Kohli scored his 49th ODI century. The journalist suddenly asked the question. I didn’t understand the question. Scoring 49 hundred is not easy. What I said was wrong, I’m feeling for it,” Kusal Mendis said.
