‘Kya paari khela hai yaar ye banda’ – Fans react as Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra hit century in 2023 World Cup opener against England

New Zealand are set to begin their 2023 ODI World Cup campaign with a massive win. The 2019 runners-up are currently (October 5) facing defending champions England at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad in the opener of the Premier 50-over tournament. On the back of opener Devon Conway and all-rounder Rachin Ravindra’s brilliant century, the Black Caps are currently dominating the match.

Earlier after winning the toss and opting to field first, the Kiwi bowlers managed to restrict their opponents to 282-9. Chasing a respectable score, New Zealand were hoping for a strong start, but England all-rounder Sam Curran struck early on, dismissing Will Young for a golden duck in the second over. England were expected to dominate from then on, but Conway and Ravindra had other plans.

The left-handed duo kept the momentum going as they attacked the Kiwi bowlers mercilessly. Ravindra brought up his half-century in just 36 balls, and in the very next over (13th over) New Zealand reached the 100-run mark with Conway also notching up a half-century. England’s bowling has been poor, with Conway and Ravindra in excellent touch, punishing every loose ball.

Conway, Ravindra smash centuries in their maiden ODI World Cup

Both were in the race to register their respective centuries in the maiden ODI World Cup, but it was Conway the first to reach the milestone. The 32-year-old was the Player of the Match in the IPL 2023 final and has now scored a century in the first match of the World Cup. Ravindra was not far behind his partner as the 23-year-old hit triple figures a few overs later. Playing just his 9th ODI innings, the Indian-origin cricketer scored a brilliant century off just 82 balls.

Earlier, former skipper Joe Root set the foundation for England with an 86-ball 77 runs. All of England’s players hit the double-digit scores – setting a record of becoming the first team to do so in an ODI innings. However, the lack of big partnerships and individual scores meant they could not put up a challenging score on the board.
