In a thrilling encounter in the 8th match of the ODI World Cup 2023, Pakistan emerged victorious, defeating Sri Lanka by six wickets. In a high-scoring battle that left fans on the edge of their seats, four batters scored centuries. The heroes of Pakistan’s remarkable chase were Mohammad Rizwan and Abdullah Shafique.

Earlier, Sri Lanka’s skipper, Dhasun Shanaka, won the toss and chose to bat first. The decision seemed to pay off as opener Pathum Nissanka, along with Kusal Mendis, formed a solid partnership of 102 runs for the second wicket. Nissanka displayed fine form, contributing 51 runs off 61 balls, featuring seven boundaries and a six.

Following Nisannka’s departure, Mendis continued his splendid performance, amassing an impressive 122 runs off just 77 deliveries, which included a staggering fourteen fours and six sixes. Sadeera Samrawickrama added to Sri Lanka’s total with his fantastic knock of 108 runs off 89 balls, featuring eleven fours and two sixes. However, Pakistan’s bowlers made a strong comeback towards the end, limiting Sri Lanka to a formidable total of 344/9 in their allotted 50 overs. For Pakistan, Hasan Ali has been the standout performer, claiming four crucial wickets.

Abdullah Shafique and Rizwan scripted a historic run chase

Pakistan’s pursuit of the mammoth target faced an early setback as they lost skipper Babar Azam and opener Imam-Ul-Haq. However, Abdullah Shafique, partnering with wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan, turned the tide with a magnificent 176-run stand for the third wicket. Shafique crafted a splendid maiden ODI century, smashing 113 runs off 103 balls, featuring 10 fours and three sixes.

After Shafique’s departure, Rizwan, along with Saud Shakeel, continued the charge, contributing 95 runs for the fourth wicket. Shakeel chipped in with 31 runs off 30 balls, including two boundaries. In the end, it was Rizwan and Iftikhar Ahmed who calmly guided Pakistan to victory. Rizwan’s unbeaten century of 134 runs off 121 balls, comprising nine fours and four sixes, was instrumental in Pakistan’s successful chase.
